Network Virtualisation is really a subset of the functionality available with VMware’s product range. When virtual servers are created within VMware (see Server Virtualisation for further information) they are connected together using ‘virtual switches’. Administrators may choose whether these virtual switches are connected to physical network adaptors (and therefore to the outside world), or purely used internally by the virtual machines. In this way, a secure network environment can be created, wherein insecure data communications takes place completely within the virtual environment.
